Drive by Praying and Western Union

I could not help chuckling at the initiative taken by some churches in inner city USA. To show that there is a godly alternative to gun crime they have taken to driving around deprived neighbourhoods scattering prayer as they go. Some have suggested that this is a waste of time but those who say so are surely missing the point of the symbolic gesture.

One of my recent ventures into the realm of the symbolic gesture is the signing of an on-line petition, organised by avaaz.org to put pressure on companies such as Western Union who charge a 20% fee for money transfers for migrant workers wishing to send money to their home countries. Even the World Bank, which is not known for its charitable impulses thinks 5% should be the limit. Such reverse Robin Hoodism surely requires some response from those of us with very little power so I signed, but I will add some prayers too!
