Ben constructed a brilliant analogy between James Baldwin’s analysis of structural racism in America and St Augustine’s understanding of original sin, showing how the two pose similar challenges to our modern liberal assumptions about the over-and-doneness of the past and the purely individual nature of transgression, culpability, and repentance. Definitely a keeper for ongoing soul searching and conversation.
